Snow-shoe hiking in South Tyrol at Kronplatz

Walking with snow-shoes is actually not really something new. Due to the new equipment snow-shoe hiking has become more and more popular in the past few years. Snow-shoe hiking is an ancient winter activity, which came to the Alpine region from Scandinavia during the 19th century. Due to alpine skiing snow-shoe hiking became less and less popular, until the interest in unspoiled nature provided this sport with a renaissance.

This sport is suitable for everyone. Due to the new technique and the distribution of body weight onto a small surface you can elegantly flow over the snow. In comparison to their predecessors, modern snow-shoes are much lighter and smaller, and also fit into a rucksack. You do not need any special shoes for your snow-shoe hike. However, your shoes have to be rugged, warm and water-repellent. Your shoes easily fit into the binding, which has an elastic connection to the snow-shoe. Hence, at each step the frame tilts in a way which makes fast walking possible.
